   A. adj. Of or pertaining to Oliver Cromwell, who became Protector of
the
Commonwealth of England in 1653. spec. Designating a type of chair (see
quots.).

   1905 A. Hayden Chats on Old Furnit. iii. 96 There is a style of chair,
probably im****ted from Holland, with leather back and leather seat which
is
termed 'Cromwellian'.  1948 H. Gordon Old Eng. Furnit. iv. 33 In the ten
years or so of the Commonwealth régime+furniture was extremely plain, and
the chair that is generally labelled 'Cromwellian' may well have been a
Puritan model.  1970 G. Savage Dict. Antiques 108/2 Cromwellian chair, a
modern term to describe a plain chair of Spanish design slightly decorated
with turning, with slung leather seat and back, the leather held in place
with large-headed studs.

   B. n. An adherent or partisan of Cromwell; one of the settlers in
Ireland
at the 'Cromwellian Settlement' of 1652, or of their descendants.

Hist. Eng. IV. 112 The stern Cromwellian, now+left the undisputed lord of
the blood-stained and devastated island.

Cruelty and Cromwellism were at that diabolical Pitch.  1881 Parnell in
Daily News 3 Oct. 6/3 The Gospel of Puritanism which might be called
