The larger issue here is the politically
correct rewriting of history, to discredit not
just Jefferson but other founding fathers
based on their background as slave owners.
Therefore invalidating whatever their, (they
of white European ancestory) achivements
were based on our modern day standards are
in relation to slavery.
It is also a way to say that slaves played
a much larger role in the formation of
this country, as more than just as
common laborers.
The facts are many slaves fought and
labored for the British against Americans in
not the Revolutionary War, but also in the
war of 1812. And that many light skinned
freed slaves were slave owners themselves.
This speaks volumes of the economic need
for unpaid labor, in order to survive in an
America that was not only soil to be fought
over, but a land that one had to work hard at
just to survive. This is where the modern
day values about slavery becomes blurred in
misconceptions about the tyranical rule of
white slave owners, completely missing the
point that the times and cir***stances made
it necessary for the use of unpaid labor.
Right or wrong, slavery is something that has
gone on since antiquity and seems to be a
necessary building block for many civilized
nations throughout history.
Also, history records that blacks weren't the
only race of people enslaved, whites too in
ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, and
throughout feudal Europe played a
necessary role in the affairs of the building
of those civilizations.
In the Revolution, the freed blacks who
served as volunteer militiamen and who did
labor, such as cooking, digging, building,
hauling and other common labor tasks, did
so because they were not admitted as regular
army personel, largely because of an edict
from General Wa****ngton not to use armed
slaves in the fight.
In the conflict, the distinction must be made
between free blacks, many whom joined and
fought in the American militia, and the slaves
who were wooed by the British to escape
and join in their cause with the promise of
freedom. The British not only used them but
native American Indians to fight against the
patriot cause.
Also, the British ended up betraying their
promise to many of the slaves and were
****pped to British held islands in the
Carribian, which largely accounts for today's
racial makeup of the modern day Hatian,
Cuban, Puerto Rican, as well as just about all
the other smaller islands...
