Chinese robe pattern req'd (Ching dynasty?)

by Rexx Magnus <trashcan@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 9, 2004 at 01:57 PM

(Posted this initially to uk.rec.crafts.sewing - suggested that I also
pose the question here also)

Need a bit of help with finding some patterns, but I'll be polite and
introduce myself a bit first. :)

Always been into sewing little things since I was a kid, but in the past
few years ended up giving Mum's sewing machine a run for its money, since
I got into medieval re-enactment. Costume being expensive, I decided to
attempt to copy a few patterns (and make up some of my own) - though I
tend to just 'do it' and not draw very detailed patterns out to begin
with.

First creation was copied from a monks robe that I bought - the original
was made from material that was too light, plus it wasn't long enough, so
I laid it out flat, roughly copied the shape and tweaked it a bit to fit:

Second was a sort of 'robin hood' style costume - as the monks robe was
too early a period for some events, so I attempted to make some trousers,
cloak, ****rt and jerkin/waistcoat. The trousers weren't terribly
successful, so I ended up buying some proper ones after the bum split!
The waistcoat I was quite pleased with, copying the basic shape from a
bodywarmer - then adding quilting to it. Sewing that was a nightmare.
I actually found out how to do those double seams (french hem/seam?)
whilst doing the ****rt, which meant no tatty bits on the inside.

I kept the cloak, but replaced the trousers - still wearing the ****rt and
jerkin:

I also made a mask for halloween events, sewing the veins on the leaves by

machine, but having to attach them to the main mask by hand:

A robe followed, for some medieval events and other things, this time all
sewn by hand (and it's proper wool!) as I was cutting the material up
whilst away one weekend. I thought I'd tack it rather than sew it on the
fly, but just ended up doing the entire thing by hand instead.

The latest thing is a chinese style top, which I wear when doing tai chi
now - I just wanted to make something that I could wear daily, rather than

at special events. It's lined as well, which was horrid to work out,
making two jackets and sewing them the right way out! The cord is all
handmade (lucette) though I want to try to make something for doing tai
chi in the summer, as it's rather warm to wear, hence my following
question.

Anyone know where I might be able to find a pattern/guide online as to how

to make one of these robes?

Probably be making it by hand, as I've seen some nice satin for sale in a
local shop, and don't really want to trust it to the machine!
