Pay attention, Bill!  Connery has already been suggested, but he's
well and truly retired.

Just as an aside, Connery would be a very poor choice for Smith, as
Connery has too commanding a screen personality.  Smith was, by all
accounts, a rather low-key individual--one officer recalled never
hearing him raise his voice.  Connery's persona wouldn't be well-
suited to the sort of "well, I've well and truly bollixed things, so
I'll just gradually descend into a funk and hide on the bridge"
mentality which overcame Smith.
