sacrifices of the Soviet troops

Apparently, the cynicicism of the pact was not digestible (acceptable)
for some idealistic (ideological) adherents to
Comunism and to Naziism, as the article mentions

If the pact were Hitler's genius, then his subsequent judgment (&
madness) could not overcome  the resistant Russians in the harsh
winter
