Parish Constables in Commonwealth England

by J M Kemp <news@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Dec 2, 2004 at 06:53 AM

I'm doing an event at Oakwell Hall (near Bradford, England) on the
weekend of 10-12 December (i.e. in eight days). I'm going to be playing
the part of either a parish constable or overseer of the poor. The event
is set at Christmas in 1653.

We'll be conducting a parish vestry *** court leet to show the public
some of the real issues of the period and the general attitude to them
(we've got poverty, bastardy and single mothers in the dock). While I
have a general idea of what is to happen I'm not doing well with Google
(which is unusual for me) in finding out more about parish constables
for that period. Does anyone have any useful links or readily available
sources (bear in mind that I don't have time to wait for mail order from
exotic faraway places).

Even just some referenced information would be good. It would also help
add some more signal to the groups. I should also point out that I'm
just a normal re-enactor and not a professional paid person.

Thanks.
