HIV and Civilization in Southern Africa

by shanefield@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Jun 10, 2005 at 04:34 PM

Tribal ("bush") people in sub-Sahara Africa did not have native
civilizations that included writing, so they did not have a great
amount of ac***ulated knowledge (such as science, etc.). Their cultures
are very different from ours in America and Europe. Not having long
winters and short growing seasons, they did not have to develop
self-restraint like the northern people did, in order to survive the
cold weather in ancient times. This lack of self-restraint has
recently led to a fantastic spread of HIV / AIDS in their countries, to
a degree that is hard for Americans to believe (but it certainly is
true --- about 33% of men, women, and children have HIV). For more on
this subject, see
http://www.useless-knowledge.com/1234/june/article084.html
. (To stop
the silly blinking of ads in that site, click on the vertical scroll
bar, and hold the mouse button down.)

If we are going to help these people, we have to have an honest
understanding of their whole culture and level of civilization. I hope
our news media will be honest about it, and not so "politically
correct" as to bury the truth at the bottom of the 20th page, as too
often happens now.
