WI a slightly different "Gilligan's Island"?

by Sir Francis Burdett <sir_francis_burdett@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 2, 2008 at 02:40 PM

for lack of time for posting something interesting and of substance,
I'll post something superficial and banal:

although I didn't remember having done so, in 2005 I posted on the
allohistorical possibilities of the mid 60's American sitcom
"Gilligan's Island" http://preview.tinyurl.com/6s8x4k

There is yet another way that OTL-Gilliganverse could be different.

The original pilot for the series (view the first third here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aWS7ugvSYs
 ) was altered in several
ways before the season began.

"The pilot episode was not broadcast, because of casting changes and
restructuring of characters. In the pilot, the part of the Professor
was played by John Gabriel. Instead of the movie star and the Kansas
farm girl, the pilot had two secretaries: Ginger, a practical redhead
played by Kit Smythe, and Bunny, ****trayed by Nancy McCarthy as a
cheerful, stereotypical dumb blonde.

The pilot had a different theme song with a Calypso beat and singer
and somewhat longer opening credits shots, including scenes of
Gilligan carrying the Howells' luggage to the boat, and spilling
coffee on the Skipper during the storm. The episode proper begins with
the castaways waking up on the beached boat, and deals mostly with
practical problems: exploring the island, trying to fix the
transmitter, building huts and finding food."

If the series was aired as originally cast we very well would have no
memory of the show today as it might have been prematurely cancelled.

If the show did in fact have the same run as OTL, the Ginger/ Bunny
dynamic is entirely different from the Ginger/Mary Ann dynamic.

Pub and dorm room bull sessions would thus lose one of their treasured
tropes. ("Ginger or Bunny?" lacks punch)
