Re: Alternatives to the Twenty-Fifth Amendment (on

by raystwo@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Raymond Speer) Jul 4, 2008 at 10:05 AM

The two Vice Presidents idea is part of the constitution of the Republic
of Panama. That proviso has never been implemented in practice.

The "reconvene the Electorial College" suggestion would spark little
enthusiasm as electorial college members are party regulars usually
unknown even to people in their home states. Very few people would sleep
better at night knowing that such absolute strangers would select the
new Vice President.

Why can't we be like the French under the 5th Republic? Basically, all
that takes is a lack of co-ordination between legislative elections and
executive elections. Upon a presidential vacancy, a presidential
election is held in 30 days. The elected President has a full term
dating from his election. In an essay on succession to the presidency,
Arthur Schlesinger admitted that he thought the French pattern was
better in that respect from the American solution.
