The Roman Empire's nerve center and heart was in Southern Italy.
However, the appendages included the Northern African coast, Eastern
Mediterranean regions, and Southern Europe. These were the
"appendages" and not the heart/brain, because, like the arms and legs,
you don't need them to survive.
The first colonies of the Roman Empire which revolted was the
Romanians (or the people of modern-day Romania/Moldova). Even in the
Palestine, the people there didn't approve of Roman rule. N. African
apparently didn't care for Roman rule, because they never spoke a
Roman language or retain *any* of Roman rule to this day, unlike Spain/
****tugal/Hungary (even though Hungary isn't a Latin language, but
their culture is Roman/European to this day).
I have several questions on how to view the Roman Empire and the
peripherals of this Empire:
1. Is it accurate to believe that the Roman Empire really only
included Italy, in much the same way that the British Empire really
only included the UK, since India had very little to do with London in
terms of language, culture, allegiance, etc.?
2. Which areas were very patriotic and which ****tions were very
tenuous as to being Roman? I realize that Baghdad was part of the
Roman Empire for a while, and I would guess that they never considered
themselves to be Roman, in much the same way that Indians during the
Raj never considered them to be British.
3. What do you think is the brain/heart of the USA?
